Average percentage viewed (APV)
The average percent of a video watched, across all viewers.
APV (sometimes called AVP) normalizes for video length, which makes it useful for comparing across uploads of different durations.
Healthy APV varies by length: 60%+ for under 60s, 50%+ for 1–5 minutes, 40%+ for 5–15 minutes, 30%+ for 15+.
APV is one of two halves of the watch-time equation; the other is total duration.
Why it matters
APV is the cleanest cross-upload comparison metric in retention analytics. Watch it weekly.
How to improve it
- 01Compare APV within length buckets, not across.
- 02Use APV gaps to identify problem templates.
- 03Don't optimize APV at the cost of total watch time.
