Average percentage viewed (AVP) normalizes AVD against video length. A 60 percent AVP on a 10 minute video and a 60 percent AVP on a 60 second short are very different in absolute watch time but identical in audience satisfaction.
Both Shorts and long-form YouTube use AVP as a quality input. Shorts that hit 90 percent plus AVP tend to enter a hot loop where the algorithm aggressively re-circulates them. Long-form videos above 50 percent AVP tend to outperform their channel baseline.
AVP is more useful than AVD for diagnosing pacing problems, because it controls for length. Use AVD to optimize for absolute reach, AVP to optimize for editorial quality.
Why it matters
AVP is the cleanest metric for comparing pacing quality across videos of different lengths. A creator who pushes AVP from 38 to 55 is improving the work itself, regardless of how long the videos are.
How to improve it
- 01Trim the last 10 to 15 percent. Most creators ramble at the end and tank AVP.
