Watch time

Total minutes viewers spent watching a video or channel.

Watch time is the cumulative minutes viewers spent inside your content. It is the primary input YouTube uses to compute channel-level distribution priority, monetization eligibility, and search ranking weight.

Watch time = views × average view duration. Both inputs compound, which is why a small AVD lift on a video with high views produces an outsized watch time gain.

Public watch time (the metric used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility) excludes Shorts. The 4000 public watch hours requirement is long-form only.

Watch time
watch_time = views × AVD

Why it matters

Watch time is the currency YouTube settles in. Every algorithm decision, from suggested placement to home feed ranking, weights watch time more than view count or like count.

How to improve it

  • 01Push video length to the point where AVD stays above 50 percent. Going longer with strong retention is the fastest watch time lift.
  • 02Build end screens that lead into related uploads. Cross-video watch time stacks.
  • 03Recover dormant videos with thumbnail and title rewrites. Cheaper than producing new content.
