First 3 seconds

The opening 0–3 second window where short-form viewers decide to stay or swipe.

The first 3 seconds is the highest-leverage window in any short-form video. On TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts the swipe decision is largely made before second 3, and that decision propagates through the algorithm as the dominant ranking signal for the first push.

Top creators design this window around three jobs: stop the scroll, set a clear promise, and create a curiosity gap that demands resolution. Skipping any one of the three collapses hook rate by 10–25 points.

Long-form YouTube has an analogous window of 15–30 seconds, but the principles are identical: motion, promise, gap.

Why it matters

Improving the first 3 seconds is the single fastest way to lift watch time. A 10-point improvement here compounds into every downstream metric — AVD, CTR re-evaluation, and second-pool push.

How to improve it

  • 01Lead with motion or a result shot, not your face.
  • 02Promise something specific and resolvable in the same video.
  • 03Cut the first 1–2 seconds of warm-up after the first edit.
  • 04Test 3 different opens on the same body to find the ceiling.
Apply it
