Thumbnail contrast
The luminance and color separation that makes a thumbnail readable at small sizes.
Most thumbnail impressions happen at 100x100 px or smaller. If contrast is weak, the thumbnail fails before content is even considered.
Strong contrast comes from luminance separation between subject and background, complementary color accents, and a single dominant focal element.
Outline strokes, drop shadows, and split-background design are tools to increase contrast without sacrificing the original photograph.
Why it matters
Thumbnails that fail the squint test reliably underperform. Lifting contrast typically adds 0.5–1.5 percent absolute CTR.
How to improve it
- 01Preview every thumbnail at 100x100 px before publishing.
- 02Run a black-and-white luminance check.
- 03Cut backgrounds away with hard edges rather than soft blends.
