Drop-off
A sharp decline at a specific point on the retention curve.
A drop-off is a localized dip on the retention curve, distinct from steady decay. Drop-offs are diagnostic: each one points to a specific moment where the content lost a meaningful chunk of viewers.
Three common drop-off patterns: the hook drop (first 10 percent), the promise drop (when the opening promise feels unfulfilled), and the chapter drop (transitions between sections).
The fix is almost always in the 3 to 5 seconds before the drop, not at the drop itself. The drop is where viewers acted on a decision they already made.
Why it matters
Drop-offs are the most actionable diagnostic in audience retention. A single resolved drop-off can lift AVP by 5 to 10 points on the next upload that uses the lesson.
How to improve it
- 01Find the steepest drop. Rewatch the 10 seconds before. Identify the broken promise or pacing dead-spot.
- 02Repeat the diagnostic on 5 consecutive videos to find your channel's chronic drop-off patterns.
- 03Once identified, fix in the next upload. Avoid re-editing past videos unless they have ongoing reach.
