Face thumbnail

A thumbnail that uses a clearly visible human face, usually with high emotional valence.

Face thumbnails outperform faceless thumbnails in most niches by 15–35 percent CTR. The exception is faceless content categories where the face would feel out of place.

The emotion on the face matters more than the face itself. Surprise and outrage out-CTR neutrality by 2–3x.

Eye contact direction also matters: looking at the off-screen object outperforms looking at the viewer in many tutorial categories.

Why it matters

Face thumbnails are the default starting point for any creator working on CTR. Faceless variants should only be tested after a baseline is established.

How to improve it

  • 01Shoot dedicated thumbnail expressions, not stills from the video.
  • 02Aim for clear, single emotion. Mixed emotions confuse and depress CTR.
  • 03Crop tight: the face should occupy 40–55% of the frame.
