Narrative tension

The accumulated sense that something unresolved is about to resolve.

Narrative tension is the engine of retention. It is created by stacking open loops, withholding payoffs, and using pacing changes to signal that resolution is near.

The best long-form creators engineer tension curves the same way they engineer retention curves. Every meaningful rise on the retention curve has a tension event beneath it.

Tension decays. Without active maintenance, a video's tension flattens by minute 2–3, which is when most channels see their first major drop-off.

Why it matters

Sustained tension is the cleanest indicator of a video that will compound — both for completion rate and session time on the channel.

How to improve it

  • 01Map every minute of a long-form video to a specific open loop.
  • 02Resolve no more than one loop per minute.
  • 03Use silence and pacing breaks deliberately to refresh tension.
