Story arc
The setup–conflict–resolution structure underneath a video.
Even unscripted videos have an implicit story arc. The audience experiences the video through the lens of setup, conflict, and resolution, whether or not the creator labelled it.
Channels that succeed in long-form treat the arc as primary and the topic as secondary. Topic decides who clicks; arc decides who stays.
Common arcs include reverse-chronological (start at the result), the heist (set up the impossible task), and the diagnosis (here's what's broken, here's why, here's the fix).
Why it matters
A clear story arc improves AVD by 20–40 percent on videos longer than 5 minutes versus the same content delivered as a list.
How to improve it
- 01Pick one of three arcs per long-form video and commit fully.
- 02Plant the resolution element early, deliver it late.
- 03Avoid mixing arcs inside the same video.
