YouTube's monetization program, unlocked at 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours.

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is the on-platform monetization tier. Joining requires 1000 subscribers and either 4000 public long-form watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

YPP unlocks ad revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and access to the Shopping integration. It does not change distribution. The algorithm treats monetized and non-monetized videos the same.

Lower 'YPP Lite' tier exists in some regions at 500 subscribers and 3000 watch hours, unlocking fan funding but not ads.

Why it matters

YPP is the on-platform revenue baseline. Sponsorships, affiliate, and product sales will eventually dwarf YPP for serious creators, but YPP is the first reliable signal that a channel is commercially viable.

How to improve it

  • 01Hit YPP via long-form watch hours, not Shorts views. Long-form RPMs are 10 to 50x higher.
  • 02Once monetized, optimize for mid-roll-friendly video length (8 minutes plus).
  • 03Niche matters: finance, tech, and B2B RPMs run 5 to 15x higher than entertainment.
