Voice pacing

The rhythm and tempo of on-camera or voiceover narration.

Voice pacing affects retention almost as much as content does. Too slow loses viewers; too fast prevents comprehension.

Ideal pacing varies by niche: 150–170 WPM for talking-head, 180–200 WPM for high-energy short-form, 130–150 WPM for storytelling.

Variable pacing (faster on setup, slower on payoff) consistently outperforms uniform pacing.

Why it matters

Voice pacing is one of the cheapest retention interventions available: it requires no new content, only editing discipline.

How to improve it

  • 01Measure WPM on your top performers.
  • 02Cut filler words and breath pauses aggressively.
  • 03Vary pacing across the video deliberately.
