RPM

Creator revenue per 1000 video views, after YouTube's share.

RPM (revenue per mille) is the creator-facing version of CPM: total earnings divided by total views, expressed per 1000. Unlike CPM, RPM includes views that did not see an ad, includes YPP fee deductions, and includes non-ad revenue like channel memberships.

RPM is the only honest number for forecasting income. CPM is what advertisers pay; RPM is what creators take home per 1000 views actually delivered.

Niche, geo, video length, and seasonality all move RPM. Q4 RPMs are typically 30 to 60 percent higher than Q1.

Why it matters

RPM combined with view count gives a realistic income forecast. A creator pulling 500k monthly views at 8 dollars RPM earns 4k per month from YouTube, before any sponsor or affiliate income.

How to improve it

  • 01Migrate toward higher-RPM niches if monetization is the priority. Editorial overlap matters: do not abandon what works.
  • 02Length, geo mix, and seasonality move RPM more than any single editorial change.
